I think I’m becoming Dilbert…
You remember him don’t you? He’s the cartoon character created by Scott Adams who works in an environment where the company moves in circles creating ‘busy work’, bosses are incompetent and bureaucracy is rampant. Now I might not have Dilbert’s corporate dress-sense or hair-style but I‘m increasingly feeling like I live in his world!
Enterprises, like the one Dilbert works for, seem to dumb-down leadership, fearing the repercussions and risks of thinking and doing things differently. Sound familiar? These enterprises will eventually perish unless a new kind of internal leadership is designed that will turn the organisational culture around. They need bespoke leadership actions appropriate for their time, their challenges, their industry and their goals. These bespoke leadership actions being best facilitated by wise leaders who are unique and agile in their thinking, doing and engaging of others.
I’ve been reading Rise of the DEO: Leadership by Design (Guidice & Ireland, 2014) and love the provocations in the text. I truly appreciate the ‘workouts’; the question posed of the DEOs profiled “What is your superpower?”; and, believe it or not, the Table of Contents!
Bespoke Leadership, both at the organisational and individual levels, is the ability to lead with a constructive and transformative outlook on social and contextual issues.
